(FALLS CHURCH, VA, May 21, 2010)—To mark the emergence of readers as major contributors to the modern publishing enterprise, the editors of Federal Computer Week are devoting an entire issue of the magazine to user-generated content.
The June 14th special issue of Federal Computer Week, which was scheduled to lead with an editorial calendar feature on Gov. 2.0, will instead be turned over to the original contributions from the users of FCW.com and members of GovLoop, an online social network for government employees. These online users have been invited to comment on statements concerning the future of social media, acquisition 2.0, cloud computing, federal workplace teleworking, cyber security, and Open Government plans. Readers also were invited to contribute captions to an editorial cartoon and to come up with concise definitions of Government 2.0 – in the Twitter convention of 140 characters or less.
"We thought it was high time to acknowledge the brains, insight and wit of the government information technology community by giving them a print platform as well as an online platform to share their wisdom," said David Rapp, editor-in-chief of Federal Computer Week.
Over the past several weeks, the Federal Computer Week users and Govloop members have submitted responses to questions posted on the publication’s Website, www.fcw.com. In addition, the editors invited IT community thought leaders in each of the issue’s topic areas to give their perspectives. Federal Computer Week editors will select the best user submissions and package them for publication in the print edition.
"Our readers are driving the substance of the issue, and our editors are honing and shaping the collective wisdom for the ultimate benefit of all our subscribers," Rapp said. "There are legitimate and highly valued roles for both."
Federal Computer Week, which is published 26 times a year, goes to 105,000 government IT professionals across the nation. Govloop, founded by Steve Ressler and now owned by GovDelivery, recently passed the 30,000 member milestone.
